Annual Meeting & Tutor-Student Recognition Dinner

Thursday, June 5, 2008

The Literacy Connection held ts annual meeting and Tutor-Student Recognition dinner on Thursday, June 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gail Borden Public Library in the first floor Community Rooms, 270 N. Grove Avenue, Elgin IL 60120. This event has become a popular international potluck dinner, where guests are encouraged to bring a favorite dish to share. No date has been set yet for the 2009 event.

The June meeting was a proud celebration of champions. Fashioned after the Olympics, with multicolored rings and flags from 20 different nations, the event honored commitment and accomplishments tutors and students made this year.

We saluted Chuck Fox for 20 years, Mary Todd for 15 years and William Barnes for 10 years of tutoring. Several tutors and students also received 5-year pins or special recognition via written nominations from their peers. Thirty-six outstanding students also graduated from our program.

Our Board of Directors also appointed five new members, including Kevin Corry (Retired), Richard Robinson (Robinson Legal Services), Trinidad Rodriguez (Retired), Sandra Switzer (Judson University) and Carlos Trujillo (Highland Elementary School).

Trivia Bee - Saturday, April 5, 2008

The 11th annual Trivia Bee fundraiser buzzed into town on Saturday, April 5, 2008. This exciting annual contest raises money for The Literacy Connection’s programs and tests the capacity of participants to remember both frivolous and important facts from a variety of categories. The event includes a raffle and a silent auction as well. Top teams win prizes, trophies, and – perhaps most important – bragging rights.

For the first time, the 2008 Trivia Bee was a morning event, with continental breakfast and registration starting at 8:30 a.m, with the competition at 9:30 a.m. Trivia Bee took place at a new venue as well: the Fox River Room in the beautiful Grand Victoria Casino, 250 South Grove Avenue in Elgin. Teams this year also had up to four members - many minds make light work! Teams, supporters and audience members had the afternoon free to celebrate their victories, drown their losses, and enjoy their new raffle and silent auction prizes.

The 2009 Trivia Bee will be held on April 4. More details to come soon. In the meantime, keep honing those trivia skills!
