JOIN US AT TRIVIA BEE 2010 - APRIL 17 IN ELGIN!

Are you great at remembering facts and details, or the one who stumps family and friends with widespread knowledge on a lot of different subjects? Then don't miss Trivia Bee 2010 - a contest buzzing into Elgin on Saturday, April 17!

Participate in the competition or come support and cheer for your favorite local team. The Literacy Connection's largest annual fundraiser, the Trivia Bee challenges participants to remember both frivolous and important facts from a variety of categories. Three-person teams from area organizations and businesses compete for exciting prizes, trophies and bragging rights. The event also includes a popular raffle and silent auction.

This year's Bee will be held on Saturday, April 17 in the Fox River Room of the Grand Victoria Casino, 250 South Grove Avenue, in Elgin. Please call our office at 847-742-6565 with any questions.

SAVE THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2010 FOR OUR

TUTOR-LEARNER RECOGNITION DINNER!

 

Plan to attend our annual international potluck dinner, held to honor and celebrate tutors and learners and their accomplishments. Everyone is asked to bring a favorite dish to share on our buffet table. The dinner will be held on June 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Community Rooms A, B and C of the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 North Grove Avenue, in Elgin.

25th Anniversary Gala - Saturday, September 12, 2009

       

On the evening of Saturday, September 12, more than 125 learners, volunteers and friends of literacy attended The Literacy Connection's 25th Anniversary Gala at the Gail Borden Public Library. The library's lobby was transformed into a sparkling tribute to the milestones and people of The Literacy Connection over the past 25 years. Thank you to all volunteers, staff, Board members, community partners and local supporters of literacy who donated time and/or resources to make the event a huge success.

12th Annual Trivia Bee Fundraiser - April 4, 2009

Sixteen organizations and businesses competed in The Literacy Connection's largest annual fundraiser, Trivia Bee. The three-person trivia teams competed for exciting prizes, trophies and bragging rights, and about 100 spectators cheered them on. The event was held in the Fox River Room of the Grand Victoria Casino, 250 South Grove Avenue in Elgin.

Trivia Bee's first place headliner was The Courier News’ team (Dave Gathman, Emily McFarlan and Erik Jacobsen). Elgin Community College’s team (Dennis Lynch, Bill DeMaree and Pat Parks) took second place. Clee Engineering’s team (Bud Wilson, Peter Wilson, Steve McCracken) clinched third place after a tie-breaking, sudden-death round which bumped the Fox Docs’ team to fourth place.

The Literacy Connection celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The organization’s largest annual fundraiser, Trivia Bee raises between $10,000 and $20,000 to assist adults with Basic Reading and English as a Second Language. Each year, these programs serve more than 300 students in sixteen northwest suburban Chicago communities.The Bee tests participants to remember both frivolous and important facts from a variety of categories. The event also includes a popular raffle and silent auction.

Other teams competing in Trivia Bee 2009 included Algonquin Area Public Library, Business Matters, Community Crisis Center, Elgin Academy, Fox Docs, Friends of the Algonquin Library, Gail Borden Public Library, Grand Victoria Casino (two teams) Kane ROE bots (Kane County Regional Office of Education), Kiwanis Club of Elgin and Rotary Club of Elgin. Organizations and individuals sponsoring teams included Thomas and Deb Dempsey, EFS Foundation, Elgin Noon Rotary, First Community Bank, Grand Victoria Foundation, Commissioner Brendan F. Houlihan, IHC Construction Companies, Lundstrom Insurance, Ralph Helm, Inc., and a few donors who wished to remain anonymous.

Laughter for Literacy Another Howling Success

About 250 people enjoyed a night of good, clean comedy at The Literacy Connection's 2nd annual Laughter for Literacy comedy night on November 8 at the Gail Borden Public Library.  GreenRoom Productions performed for a full house at one of event's two shows.  New this year, guests also enjoyed an old-fashioned bake sale prior to each show. Goodies were donated by Literacy Connection volunteers and Piece-a-Cake Bakery of East Dundee, IL.
