Frequently Asked Questions about being a Volunteer Literacy Tutor

Do I have to know another language to be a tutor?

No. We teach using English.

Do I have to be an educator or have a college degree to be a tutor?

No. Tutors must be at least 18 years old and be able to read and write English. 

How long does it take to train as a volunteer tutor?

Orientation and training workshops take 18 hours. During this time, you will learn characteristics of adult learners, ways to work with adult students, lesson planning and other helpful information.

How much time does it take to be a volunteer tutor?

Most tutors and students work together an hour or so a week, though some opt to work longer.

Do students pay for this service?

No. There is an initial fee of $10 to test students and assess their language or reading level, but there are no fees for tutoring.

How does the Literacy Connection program work?

We receive funding from the Secretary of State Literacy Office, United Way and charitable foundations to recruit and train volunteers, match them with students and provide oversight, training and resources. We test incoming students to assess their literacy level and re-test them at intervals to assess their progress. Because of the large number of volunteers, we are able to provide services without charge to our students.
