In one hour per week, you can change lives through literacy.

Adult learners in our community are waiting to be matched with a volunteer like you!

Our tutors are volunteers in our community who support our mission to help individuals reach their literacy goals. No prior teaching or tutoring experience needed. All training is provided.

There are a variety of ways you can choose to support learners, including:

  • One-on-one tutoring pairs one tutor and one learner to focus on individualized learning.

  • Small group tutoring brings together several learners at a similar level to receive tutor support and conversation practice.

  • FeelFluent Chasers Classes are led by an English language instructor and supported by volunteer tutors. These classes support beginning English Language Learners who are on our waitlist for a one-on-one or small group tutor and would like to begin their learning process.

  • Conversation Groups are hosted by Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin and led by Literacy Connection volunteer tutors. These groups are open to the community and no assessments are required. Learn more about conversation groups.

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older.

  • Have a working knowledge of the English language. Please know that English does not have to be your first language.

  • Complete a one-hour online orientation with a Literacy Connection staff member where you will learn more about the program and training.

  • Complete a total of 12 hours of free, online tutor training through Literacy Works. (If you are a retired teacher or hold a valid Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) certificate, you can receive up to 9 hours of training credit.)

Commitment

We ask that volunteers commit to tutoring at least 4 hours each month for a minimum of one year. We recommend 1 hour per week. Tutoring takes place at a mutually agreed upon time and location, and can include in-person (public location), hybrid, or online tutoring (your preference).
