Members of The Literacy Connection Board of Directors volunteer their time and talents to share their unique ideas and skills with The Literacy Connection staff and make an impact on the organization’s governance.

 

Qualified individuals possess strong leadership skills as well as a passion for our mission of helping local residents improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.

 

Board Member Responsibilities

 

Board members participate in board and committee meetings, provide good governance and oversight, and embrace the vision and mission of The Literacy Connection. More specifically, Board Members:

  • Advance the mission of The Literacy Connection.

  • Determine and monitor the organization’s policies, programs, and services.

  • Develop and execute a strategic plan to ensure that The Literacy Connection is serving their mission and meeting the changing needs of clients and community.

  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to the Executive Director and staff as they fulfill the agency mission.

  • Attend board meetings on the fourth Monday of the month, reviewing the agenda and supporting materials prior to the meeting, and actively participating in the meeting discussions.

  • Engage with key volunteers, tutors, and learners.

  • Actively participate in planning and execution of fundraising and networking efforts throughout the year.

Board Member Qualifications

  • Commitment to enhance literacy for adult learners across the communities we serve.

  • Support for the mission of The Literacy Connection.

  • Capacity to contribute toward the work of the Board and the organization.

 

To achieve greater representation of the clients and communities that we serve and a deeper range of expertise, The Literacy Connection Board of Directors seeks candidates for the Board who reflect one or more of the following priority characteristics:

  • Personal connection or experience in working within our service area, preferably as a resident or community advocate.

  • Professionals in the field of law, finance, or human resources

  • Experience with philanthropy/fundraising

The Literacy Connection is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization helping adult individuals learn to read, write, speak, and understand English. Adult learners are provided one-on-one or small group tutoring services for free in the sixteen northwest Chicago suburban communities we serve. All donations are tax deductible to the full amount allowed by law.
