2nd Annual Poetry & Literacy Festival: "Writing Down Our Roots"
Join us for this year's Poetry & Literacy Festival on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 3p - 7:30 pm at Elgin Community College.
This year's event centers around the theme "Writing Down Our Roots." Join award-winning Chicagoland poets Diego Baez and Chasity Gunn who will lead creative writing workshops for families and individuals and come listen to Pushcart Prize winning author and poet Julian Randall discuss his Dominican and African-American heritage as he shares how our ancestors gave us a road map for being in community with one another.
Or celebrate your love of the spoken word by participating in or listening to the Open Mic and Poetry Slam competition. There will be opportunities to purchase poets' books and win raffle prizes. All ticket proceeds and your donations go towards supporting The Literacy Connection's mission of providing free, quality literacy services for adults in Elgin and surrounding areas. We can't wait to see you there!

At our first-ever poetry festival on April 12, 2025, our community came together to celebrate language and poetry, be inspired by the creativity in our community, and support The Literacy Connection at our spring fundraiser. Thanks to all our participants, speakers, judges, and supporters. This all-day event culminated in an evening open mic & Poetry Slam. Congratulations to Campbell Jochaniewicz (pictured below in blue with our judges) on winning the Poetry Slam! Additionally, thanks to Elgin Poet Laureate Aron Ryan for participating and sharing a commemorative poem for the festival.

2nd Annual Resource Fair - Once Upon a Time (Erase Una Vez)
Thanks to all who attended our free community celebration on September 25, 2025, Once Upon a Time! We loved seeing past and present tutors, learners, volunteers, and staff there, as well as over 25 community partners who shared resources. Special thanks to all our generous sponsors and our event volunteers. Attendees enjoyed face painting by Funky Brush & Palette and storytelling by the Gail Borden Library. We can't wait to see you at next year's resource fair!
